songwriters: Howard Cable in 1952 for the "Esso Motoring Song. In 1968, the song was rewritten by Dolores Claman with Howard Cable who rewrote the arrangements for the Hockey Night in Canada theme song.

Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) is a television broadcast of the games in the National Hockey League (NHL) by CBC Sports. HNIC began broadcasting in 1952, and soon became the highest-rated program in Canadian history. Accompanying the Saturday evening show was its history theme song written by Dolores Claman and Howard Cable.

During the 2007-2008 hockey season, HNIC's copyright for the theme song expired. After negotiating to renew copyright with the songwriters, HNIC failed and chose to adopt a new theme song. There was great public outcry and some were heard to say that it had become the second anthem of Canada.

In 2008, HNIC sponsored a nationwide hunt for a new theme song. Finally, "Canadian Gold" by Colin Oberst was selected for a new generation of HNIC viewers.
